What to consider in an engagement ring

When choosing an engagement ring, you should combine practicality and style. Three key characteristics determine the suitability of the ring: material, width and surface treatment.

Material

The material of the engagement ring affects its durability and appearance. The most common materials for engagement rings are yellow gold and white gold. Yellow gold, white gold and rose gold are traditional materials for engagement rings, with the most popular gold contents being 14k (stamped 585, 58.3% gold) and 18k gold (stamped 750, 75% gold). A higher karat number means a softer metal that is more susceptible to scratches but contains more gold.

White gold contains alloy metals such as silver or palladium and is often plated with rhodium. Rhodium plating wears off over time and requires re-plating, which is a good thing to consider for maintenance. Red gold gets its hue from a copper alloy and has become a trendy color alongside yellow gold.

Silver is one of the most affordable precious metals and offers a stylish option on a smaller budget. However, sterling silver rings require more frequent cleaning due to tarnishing.

Titanium is a lightweight and durable option for engagement rings. Titanium rings are also hypoallergenic and corrosion-resistant. However, titanium and steel are difficult or impossible to resize later, unlike gold and silver. Platinum is rarer and more durable than gold, and is a hypoallergenic option for engagement rings.

Width and fit

The width of a ring affects both appearance and comfort. The most popular widths for women's engagement rings are 2–4 mm; for men, it is typically 5–8 mm. A narrower ring stacks better with a wedding ring, while a wider model is more visible on the finger.

Finding the right size is an important part of choosing: in Finland, ring size is measured as the inner diameter in millimeters, where, for example, a 17.7 mm diameter corresponds to an inner circumference of 56 mm. Ring size varies depending on the time of day and temperature, so a jeweler's shop is the best place to measure your ring size. It is a good idea to measure your engagement ring size at the end of the day, when your fingers are typically at their widest. It is also not a good idea to try on a ring immediately after strenuous exercise, as your fingers may be swollen.
