Watch Battery Replacement While You Wait – Prices, Process, and Guide

This service guide was produced by the Kulta-Aika expert team. Our in-store professionals and experienced watchmakers service your watch correctly, safely, and always using high-quality components.
Did you know? Before the 1970s, all wristwatches in the world were mechanical. When the first quartz battery-powered wristwatch was introduced, it cost as much as a brand new car. This revolution, known as the "quartz crisis," changed the watch industry forever, making precise timekeeping accessible to everyone through the power of a small button cell battery.
Has your favorite watch stopped, is it losing time, or is the second hand jumping strangely? When your watch battery is running low, it's time for a service. We handle wristwatch battery replacements professionally, quickly, and affordably in our stores in Helsinki and Vantaa.
Watch Battery Replacement – Price List in Our Stores
We offer battery replacements at very competitive prices. The price of battery replacement is determined by the structure of the watch's case back and the chosen service. Our Vantaa Tammisto branch, in particular, offers exceptionally affordable prices for basic watches.
| Service and Watch Type | Vantaa Tammisto (Säätökuja 2B) | Helsinki Kamppi |
|---|---|---|
| Snap-back watch battery replacement | 5 € | from 15 € |
| Screw-back watch battery replacement | 8 € | from 15 € |
| Water-resistant watch battery replacement + pressure test (by watchmaker) | 30 € | 35 € |
| Gold watch battery replacement (by watchmaker) | 35 € | 35 € |
Basic watch battery replacements are usually done while you wait or on the same day. Water-resistant watches, diving watches, and valuable gold watches are always sent to our watchmaker for service, which takes approximately 3–5 business days. Please note that without a separate pressure test, the watch's original water resistance rating is no longer valid after service, as opening the case back always loosens the seals.

How does a professional battery replacement proceed?
While battery replacement may seem simple, it requires precision and the right tools. When you bring your watch to Kulta-Aika, the service process proceeds as follows:
- Case back opening without scratches: The watch's case back is opened with a specialized tool designed for this purpose. Using incorrect tools can easily scratch the case back or, in the worst case, crack the watch's crystal due to pressure.
- Movement and old battery inspection: The old battery is removed, and it is ensured that it has not oxidized or leaked battery acid into the movement.
- New brand battery installation: We only use high-quality, long-lasting Swiss or Japanese brand batteries. The battery is not touched with bare hands to prevent grease from the skin from impairing electrical conductivity.
- Seal inspection and closing: The case back seal is inspected and, if necessary, lubricated with silicone grease to ensure the watch closes tightly.
Information about watch batteries: Silver Oxide vs. Lithium
Wristwatches primarily use two different battery chemistries, which differ in voltage and application:
Silver Oxide Batteries: These are the most common button cells for traditional analog watches. Their voltage is 1.55 volts. The main advantage of a silver oxide battery is its consistent power delivery; it supplies full power to the watch until the end of its life, at which point the watch stops suddenly without a prolonged period of losing time.
Lithium Batteries: Lithium batteries are larger, often flat batteries (with a voltage of 3.0 volts). They are used in digital watches, heart rate monitors, and watches with high power-consuming functions such as backlights, alarms, or sensors. Lithium batteries last significantly longer, often up to 5–10 years.
Important warning: Never leave a dead battery inside a watch for months. A depleted battery can easily start leaking chemicals, which will corrode the watch's delicate mechanical gears and electrical circuits, rendering them unusable. Battery replacement is an inexpensive insurance for an expensive watch.
How to tell when your watch battery is running out?
Normally, a wristwatch battery lasts about 1–3 years. Many high-quality Swiss and Japanese quartz watches have a built-in EOL function (End of Life). It indicates a decrease in battery power by making the second hand move forward in four-second jumps, but the watch still keeps accurate time. When you notice this phenomenon, the watch should be brought in for battery replacement within a few weeks before it stops completely.
If your watch has a high water resistance rating and you use it for swimming, we always recommend a pressure test in conjunction with battery replacement. You can read more about this in our comprehensive watch water resistance guide.
Frequently asked questions about watch battery replacement
How long does a watch battery replacement take?
Battery replacement for standard snap-back or screw-back watches usually takes only 5–15 minutes in our stores, meaning the service can easily be performed while you wait. Specialized work for the watchmaker (such as pressure tests and gold watches) will be completed in 5-7 business days.
Can I change my wristwatch battery myself?
Self-replacement is not recommended. Without the correct opening tools, the case back can easily get scratched beyond repair. In addition, the case back gasket can slip out of place when closing the case, causing the watch to completely lose its protection against dust and moisture. Professional replacement is so affordable that it's not worth taking the risk.
What does watch pressure testing mean during battery replacement?
During pressure testing, the watch is placed in a special testing device that uses air or water pressure to measure whether the watch case, crown, or crystal seals are leaking. This is an essential procedure for all watches that are intended to remain water-resistant (e.g., 10 ATM and 20 ATM models) even after servicing.
Why did the new battery run out in less than a year?
If a high-quality brand battery drains remarkably quickly, the fault is usually not with the battery but with the watch's movement. Mechanical dirt, dried oil in the gears, or an electrical short circuit can force the movement to consume many times more power than it would for flawless operation. In such cases, the watch needs a movement cleaning or replacement instead of just a new battery.
