IGI (International Gemological Institute) is the most recommended certificate for lab-grown diamonds in 2026. IGI has retained the full 4C grading scale and dominates approximately 65% of lab-grown diamond certification. Let’s be straightforward: lab-grown diamonds are not suitable as investments. The resale value is typically only 10% to 30% of the purchase price. Production costs drop by 10% to 15% annually as technology advances, which will continue to place downward pressure on prices over the long term.
Natural diamonds typically retain 50% to 60% of their value, but they are not guaranteed investments either. The secondary diamond market is narrow, and an individual consumer will never recoup wholesale pricing.
McKinsey & Company called lab-grown diamonds "arguably the biggest challenge to diamond producers today" in a November 2024 report, outlining a scenario where lab-grown diamonds capture the majority of the market outside of luxury segments.
