Ring Resizing – Prices and Guide

This guide has been prepared by the Kulta-Aika goldsmith team. With years of experience, we know how to safely resize valuable rings so that the settings remain secure, the shape symmetrical, and the end result looks like a brand new piece of jewelry.
Does your ring spin loosely or is it at risk of falling off your finger unnoticed when you wave your hands? Wearing an oversized ring is not only bothersome but also a safety risk for valuable jewelry. Fortunately, ring resizing is a quick and safe goldsmith service. At Kulta-Aika, you can get professional ring resizing services so that your important piece of jewelry fits perfectly and securely again.
How is ring resizing done?
Yellow gold, white gold, and silver rings can almost always be resized. Ring resizing is done by precisely sawing a measured piece of metal from the bottom of the ring shank. After this, the ends of the shank are bent together, soldered, and finally the ring is filed, sanded, and polished so that the seam is no longer visible. If the ring is significantly resized and you want the cut-out gold piece back, please remember to mention this when dropping off your ring!
Note on materials: Steel, titanium, or zirconium rings cannot be resized at all due to the properties of their materials. Alliance rings completely covered in diamonds also cannot be sawn and resized.
Ring resizing price and duration
The cost of ring resizing quickly pays for itself if it prevents the loss of valuable jewelry. The price is always determined by the ring's material (gold/silver), model, and challenges posed by any stones.

Checklist: What to consider when choosing a new size?
Choosing the right size is always a compromise, as the size of our fingers constantly changes. Consider the following during the measurement phase:
- Temperature and medications: Fingers are thinner in winter than in summer heat. Medications and diet can also cause swelling. Finland has more cool months than hot ones, so it's advisable to choose a size that prevents an expensive ring from falling off in cold weather.
- Width of the ring shank: A wide ring always feels tighter than a thin ring. If you are resizing a 6 mm wide ring, measure the size with a wide sizer.
- Center of gravity of a single-stone diamond ring: If the ring has only one large stone, its center of gravity is high, causing it to spin easily on the finger. Such a ring often requires a snugger size than usual to keep the diamond beautifully positioned on the finger.
- Engravings and patterns: When resizing, a piece of the ring shank is cut off. This means less space for the inner engraving, and a long engraving might need to be redone. Strong surface patterns may also smooth out slightly at the seam.
| Inner diameter (mm) | Finger circumference (mm) |

Frequently asked questions about ring resizing
How do you know if a ring is too big?
A ring is too big if it spins completely freely on your finger, slides over the knuckle without resistance, or is at risk of falling off when you vigorously wave your hands or when your fingers are cold. A properly sized ring slides onto your finger effortlessly but offers slight resistance at the knuckle when removed.
How much can a ring be resized?
Plain gold rings without stones can be resized by several sizes. For diamond rings (or other rings with stones), the shank cannot be bent too much to prevent the stone settings from loosening. For these rings, the safe maximum resizing is typically about one size.
Can a ring be resized at home?
Resizing a ring at home is never recommended. A ring is fine mechanics, and amateurish squeezing or bending will damage the shank, break symmetry, and can dislodge valuable gemstones. A professional goldsmith will perform the resizing so that the ring looks completely new.
How to estimate the correct ring size?
You can roughly measure your finger circumference with tape or a piece of string, but the most accurate measurement will always be obtained in a goldsmith's shop with a professional ring sizer. We recommend measuring your finger size over several consecutive days at different times (morning and evening) to account for natural swelling.
