Algiz is a symbol believed to protect against curses, intruders, and other hostile forces threatening from outside. One theory is that it represents elk antlers, an elk's head preparing to charge, or a protective and blessing hand with fingers spread. It was therefore not uncommon for weapons to be decorated with runes to bring good luck and protection in battles.

The warship awaits. The warrior king and his men sit in a semicircle around the village's blind storyteller. The king takes Thor's pendant from his neck and hands it to the storyteller. As he grasped his weapon, Thor shouted words of power, and suddenly the sky darkened and lightning flashed everywhere, and all the forces of heaven and storm were under his, Thor's, control.
