Ukko's Hammer
Ukko's Hammer (Ukonvasara) or Ukko's Axe (Ukonkirves) is a very powerful Finnish symbol. It is also the equivalent of the Scandinavian Thor's Hammer. With his weapon, Ukko, the supreme god, dispensed justice and created lightning strikes. As a symbol, Ukko's Hammer is ambiguous: with the edge downwards it resembles a boat, turned upwards it looks like a hammer, and horizontally it resembles an axe.

The moon gleams in the dark blue sky. Ferns sway in the wind. A group of travelers journeys deep into the twilight forest, amidst ancient oaks and pines. Suddenly, the leader of the group stops and raises his hand. The group halts, and the sound of footsteps ceases. Only the distant hoot of an owl is heard in the night. The man creeps past nettles, touches the trunk of a broken tree.
He raises his gaze towards the charcoal-blackened top. Circles the tree, caressing the bark with his hand. Feels the deep grooves on the rough surface. The man bends down and looks at the grooves, revealed by the moonlight: "Ukko's Hammer. He has been here." At the same time, the grooves flash into flames. A gigantic rumble is heard from afar. The night sky flashes, and the shadowed Raven's Path and the fells lurking behind it are revealed.
